Land was purchased from the Federal Government in 1855 for what was to become a stage stop on the old Dubuque Trail, an "R and R" station for soldiers from Fort Snelling and a getaway for Rochester Businessmen and Mayo Doctors.
Two giant oaks still frame the house built in 1878 by a Livi P. Hill. In early years it was known as the "Lawn Comfort Rest Home". The building was remodeled in early 1900s as a hotel by proprietor E.J. Williamson.
The hotel was sold to Lewis Frutiger on April 21, 1943 and served as a private home to the Frutiger family until it was sold on July 10, 1947 to Russell and Gertrude Carroll and Mark and Catherine Carrol. They remodeled it into a supper club (remembered as Russ and Mark Carroll's White House. The site was recommended by Duncan Hines and made it into Ford Treasury of Favorite Recipies from Famous Eating Places. Mayo family members were among those who woud entertain guests there for Sunday dinner. The White House was also a favorite spot for weddings and receptions. It functioned as a public place until 1955.
Navy doctor John Michenfelder came to the Mayo Clinic in 1958 as a resident in anesthesiology and purchased the building for a home. John and Monica Michenfelder continue to reside there today.
The above is from an article in the Rochester Post Bulletin (3/8/91), written by Pauline Walle with information given by Monica Michenfelder.
